MilliVanilli

Is It Live or Is It Memorex?

Is It Live or Is It Memorex?

Has Anything Changed Since 1982?

MilliVanilliBack then, as the technology craze was happening in recordings, Memorex, a cassette and video tape company, challenged the consumer to decide for themselves, were they listening/viewing a live performance or was the performance recorded on Memorex tape?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZyFcJcZiaU

Now, 31 years later, we have found out that Beyonce Knowles lip synced the US National Anthem at the Presidential Inaugural!  Was she afraid she would forget the words, ala Christina Aguilera, while singing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZcN04U-gM4

In Beyonce’s defense, the use of a recording is typical in large events.  All inaugural music is pre-recorded in case weather conditions or other circumstances could interrupt the program.

I believe there is a symbiotic relationship between fan and artist.  The fan expects the kind of performance they believe can be met.  Albeit they just have CD’s/major motion pictures to go on, but, nonetheless, their expectations are what they have been lead to believe.  Beyonce Knowles is a great and dynamic vocalist as well as a fine actress.  Apparently a bit of a perfectionist as well as she wants to give to her fans the type of performance they expect from her brand, polished and not raw.  Hence the recording and not live.

Symbiotic relationships also exist between sponsor and the sponsored as well.  Take Lance Armstrong as an example–sponsors might sue to get sponsorship money back!  The same money that brought sponsors hundreds of millions of dollars in profits worldwide.  Here’s a guy that never phoned it in.  He went out there and tried his hardest to win a bicycle race.  By doing so, and by doing so for 7 years in a row, in the case of the Tour de France, he put America back on the bicycling map and made American bicycle companies, biking magazines, and their support companies huge amounts of money.  Lance went to the ends of the earth (and beyond) to ride his bike by showing up, putting on his race bib and peddling live.

I believe many people feel more of a connection to a “raw” look and sound.  People falling off their bikes, NASCAR vehicles crashing, etc.  Musically speaking, I can think of albums by: Green Day, Miley Cyrus, Eminem, Sonic Youth, and Crosby/Stills/Nash off the top of my head that recorded that “raw” sound.  What about The Grateful Dead and Phish?  Great stuff.  Raw? Oftentimes you bet!

Is it too much to expect an artist to perform only one tune live?  Is it too much to expect a fan to give an artist a pass should it be too cold, too rainy, too whatever?  Ok ok, I get it…Yo Yo Ma, the famous classical cellist who performed for Obama’s first inauguration, indicated instruments weren’t functioning properly in 19-degree weather.  That works for me as it’s a piece of wood and it’s classical (perfectionist) music.

For this Inaugural, James Taylor showed up and was spot on.  Kelly Clarkson showed up and sang like a diva.  Maybe because American Idol contestants had to actually sing live and under all circumstances to forward themselves.

I tip my hat to Beyonce for wanting her performance to be perfect but just own it, and not play it up by taking out your ear piece in the middle of your performance.  Maybe the concept here is just “label it” for what it is as initially a representative for Beyonce did not immediately respond to requests for comment.  (“labeling it” is somehow controversial political issue brought to us by big agriculture. Oh, that’s another blog!).

Milli Vanilli didn’t label it and they got run out of the business.  What’s truthful now-a-days?  What’s real?  Maybe we should ask Manti Te’o?

Beyonce is performing at Super Bowl 2013 this coming Sunday.  Who will show up? Will it be Live, or will it be Memorex?

Forward-Thinking / Cutting Edge

Forward-Thinking / Cutting Edge

Entertainment for 2013

nathanheadphonesMusicians and entertainers have always been at the cutting edge of the global and political spectrum.  Hence the phrase, “Life imitates Art,” or is it, “Art imitates Life?  Now, the fans way in as well.

For example, when it comes to renewable energy sources, The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, one of the leading music festivals in the USA, is continuing its commitment towards sustainability with the installation of an array of permanent solar panels at the festival site in Tennessee.  The new solar photovoltaic system will generate approximately 61,000 kilowatt hours per year and support about 20% of the festival’s annual electricity needs.

Who paid for this?  The solar project was fully funded by “opt-in” donations that are available to Bonnaroo fans during the ticket purchase process!  In previous years, the proceeds from this opt-in donation has been used to fund the compost pad, the garden, and last year’s mobile tower of power.

SexationPink“Running part of Bonnaroo on solar power has long been a goal, as it underscores the commitment of Bonnaroo organizers and our community to the environment,” said festival partner Rich Goodstone.  “None of this could have been possible without the immense support of the generous and forward-thinking Bonnaroo community. Their contributions have brought this project to fruition.”

Mark Sonder Productions applauds this action and forward-thinking people.  Hence our commitment to bring you forward-thinking people and entertainers as well, for example, Mark Sonder, CEO of the company is an investor at Solar Components; keynote speaker, solar panel and new life battery executive Nathan Schulhof (the inventor of the MP3 Player); in addition to a hot young sensation who brings to the US the cutting edge music of the European Dance Clubs, DJ Sexation.

Music as Therapy — Newtown, CT — Sandy Hook Elementary

Music Therepy — Newtown, CT — Sandy Hook Elementary

“May the music set you free.”Carlos Santana

Transcending all borders, nationalities and native tongues, music is that all inspiring Dionysian element that drives people to love, puts a smile on their faces, soothes them in time of despair, makes them feel “cool,” makes the roses smell that much better, and sheds a different light on what they see…It can provide a wonderful boost for a community service message.  Music, both musically and in its lyrics, assists in facing the future with confidence and hope…

These are the words, from the beginning of the chapter Music: The Universal Language, that I wrote back in 1994 from the book ISES Gold.

The President of the US said it best when he stated, “I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts. I can only hope it helps for you to know that you’re not alone in your grief, that our world, too, has been torn apart, that all across this land of ours, we have wept with you.”

Or as Carlos Santana remarked on being accepted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame, “May the music set you free.”  Or from classical music Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony or Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration may be therapy.

As “mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow,” then maybe words WITH music can.

There is a tune called, “Peace and Love.” co-written by Neil Young and Eddie Vedder (from Pearl Jam) and recorded as well as released, on the 1995 album “Mirror Ball.”  http://youtu.be/5rT5DKzuEFM

Peace and love
Flying so high
Peace and love
Too young to die
Peace and love
Now you decide
Stay for the children
You don’t really want to go
Can’t feel it
pulling like you did
Peace and love

For those that wish to delve into this very important, yet still not fully explored element of music as therapy, there are a number of books which you might be interested in.  (I wrote about, and made reference to, “The Mozard Effect” in my book, “Event Entertainment and Production.”)

Champagne

Champagne Sound On A Beer Budget

Champagne Sound On A Beer Budget

Even with a small budget, utilize entertainment in 2013 with this same objective in mind — as a marketing tool.

ChampagneEveryone loves champagne to bring in the new year. In 2013 use your headliners to:

•    Promote events
•    Reward customers
•    Increase sales
•    Introduce new products
•    Recognize employees
•    Enhance brand image.

As “convention bands” are popping up all around the U.S. with costs from $7,500 to $25,000, there is even more reason to use headliners within that same price range. Plus, using the headliners generally plays much better in the invitations, save-the-date notices, sale of tickets, boosting attendance at the meeting or event, stronger PR and advertising, etc.

You say you don’t have any money? Get someone who does to support the entertainment that best meetings your meeting or event’s goals. In other words — sponsors! Just like the major motion picture OPM (Other People’s Money), you may need to attract sponsors to your event. Why would companies wish to sponsor the entertainment? To do the following:

1.  Entertain clients
2.  Heighten visibility
3.  Shape consumer attitudes
4.  Market to other businesses: “incenting” the trade
5.  Increase merchandising opportunities
6.  Drive sales.

Some planners may ask themselves, “Why do I even want entertainment for my meetings and events? What a headache!” Think of your guests, VIPs, your attendees. To hear, to see, to meet a headline entertainer is a high-perceived value for most attendees. It also creates an emotional connection to your customers. People closely identify with music. A certain song, for example, can evoke pleasant memories and helps to create a favorable product tie-in. Furthermore, it is a powerful motivator.

John Penn, vice president of marketing for Sony Music Special Products, says, “Just turn on the radio or TV or go to a movie. You will see that music is everywhere. When you bring music and entertainment into your [meeting or event’s] promotion plans, you add a unique mix of power and effectiveness for reaching your objectives, whether it is to drive traffic, sell more products, reward employees and customers, or establish a bond with your customers.”

How much is a “small budget?”

Talent costs vary considerably due to routing, workload, one-offs (not being on tour), bringing in production staff, transportation, etc. So for starters, below is a short tabulation of artists priced roughly around the $10,000 level. Note that this price may not include, sound, light, stage, backline (instruments/amps), transportation, hotel accommodations, local ground or food and beverage. (All of these items are spelled out separately in the artist’s rider).

Linwood Peel’s Tribute to The Drifters
DJ Spinderella (from Salt-N-Pepa)
• 10,000 Maniacs
• Edgar Winter
• Johnny Winter
• Iron Butterfly
• Thin Lizzy
• Rare Earth
• Peaches & Herb (to track)
Les Musiques de Broadway
• Marty Balin of Jefferson Starship
Nathan Schulhof, speaker, inventor of the MP3 Player
• Kenny Rankin
• Juice Newton
• Commander Cody
• Dr. Hook
• Rick Derringer
Atom: World’s Fastest Painter
• Gary US Bonds
Standing In The Shadows: A Tribute to The 4 Tops
• Richie Havens
• Leon Russell
• The Turtles
• Hot Tuna
• Evelyn “Champagne” King (for that champagne sound!)
• Various “American Idols”

Hiring entertainment acts, whether national, regional or local talent, will be the promotional vehicle of at least the early part of this millennium. Having a headliner at your convention or meeting almost automatically increases attendance and visibility, thus increasing sales, retail sales support, general awareness, image enhancement, sponsors and publicity. Even more important, it can turn an otherwise ho-hum meeting or event into an unforgettable experience!

Entertainers Assisting Victims of Hurricane Sandy

Entertainers Assisting Victims of Hurricane Sandy

Giving Back to our Global Community from Lady Gaga to Seinfeld. From Madison Square Garden to Portugal

Somehow the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area of the United States has sections of it that resemble a war torn area.  That war was against Hurricane Sandy.  To add insult to injury a follow-up snow storm hit the same area only days later.  This area and its people need help.  Coming to their assistance are some artists with their fans, with their stories listed below.  This is an abridged list.

MarshallTuckerBandMarshall Tucker Band Uses Tour Bus For Sandy Aid

The Marshall Tucker Band is using its tour truck to collect donations for victims of Frankenstorm Sandy. The band is in South Carolina now where their trucks were parked outside of the venues the band was playing.  The band was there to thank their fans for helping. Doug Gray, lead singer for The Marshall Tucker Band, says the band has received support from people in the northeast for over 40 years and feels their pain “on a personal level.” No scam here as the band is looking to collect coats and blankets. They have encouraged their fans to make cash donations to the American Red Cross.

MSGlogoMadison Square Garden in New York City will be holding a Benefit Concert For Sandy Aid Dec. 12

Madison Square Garden will hold a special concert next month to benefit those affected by Hurricane Sandy. No performers have been announced for the Dec. 12 event, dubbed “12-12-12.” In a release on 11/7, MSG said more details would be available in the coming days. Proceeds will benefit those affected by Sandy in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area through the Robin Hood Relief Fund. The event is being produced by those behind the 9/11 benefit “The Concert for New York City,” which featured Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, The Who and Elton John.

HardRockCasinoLogoGuns N’ Roses and The Hard Rock To Help Sandy Victims

To help the recovery of the victims of Hurricane Sandy, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and the Anschutz Entertainment Group have launched a text-to-donate campaign in support of the American Red Cross for the remaining dates in Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Democracy residency.  These shows will run through Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. During the shows, The Hard Rock’s video screens will provide information about the campaign and will encourage concert-goers to donate via text message. AEG has pledged to match donations made through the band’s run up to $5,000. Attendees can donate $10 by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999. Each night of the residency, donations can be made when the doors open until the end of the show.

JerrySeinfeldJerry Seinfeld Reaches Out To Victims Of Sandy

Nothing funny about what has happened to New York. Jerry Seinfeld has added a show in Long Island to his new tour and will donate all proceeds from it and two other performances to Sandy relief.  These shows will be 12/19 in Westbury with comedian Colin Quinn (also on the bill). Plus 11/14 in Brooklyn and 12/6 on Staten Island. Seinfeld said, “I grew up on Long Island, and New York City is home.  This is a tough time for this area, and we’re just glad to be able to help in the recovery.”

LadyGagaLady Gaga Donates $1M To Red Cross For Sandy

Lady Gaga is donating $1 million to the Red Cross to aid those affected by super storm Sandy. Gaga was born in New York.  She said she “would not be the woman or artist that I am today” if it weren’t for places like the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn.  She wrote in her blog: “Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours.” Lady Gaga added that New York is a place full of “relentless ambition.”

JoseCidhpJosé Cid Will Continue to Help Rebuild New York

José Cid, the international pop/rock superstar from Portugal just released a Christmas Song, “It’s Snowing In New York.”  José has announced that partial proceeds from ALL his live USA performances through Christmas 2013 will be donated to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City to assist in the rebuilding of the area.  The violin solo in this song was performed by a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.  José adds, he loves New York and its people and looks forward to touring the USA in 2013.

Support these and other great musicians, comedians and facilities and support the people and places hurt by Hurricane Sandy.
